65” x 38”, mixed media (pencil, acrylic, oil pastels, color pencils), on heavy brown paper
2020
This series of artwork started with the idea of creating large scale paintings while in lockdown in Maine. One day I came across this heavy duty khaki colored paper used for protecting surfaces, and I felt it would be great to paint on. I taped a section of the paper to the garage wall and started experimenting with acrylic paints. Then “social distancing” was everywhere. And I thought it might be interesting to incorporate the concept into my paintings. I found a 6 foot curved branch in the yard, attached a brush to the end of it, and started painting from a distance on the paper. Combining this with other techniques and materials, I found the resulting work to be artistically very satisfying.

This idea originated at Home Depot. During the Quarantine, I went to this store many times. One day I run into this heavy duty brown paper that is used by house painters to cover the floors. I loved how sturdy, resistant and strong this material is. So I decided to explore an idea that I saw long ago online. In this video, artists were painting with a brush attached to a stick. I was mesmerized by this insane technique. I went to the woods, and found a long, strong, and curvy branch. I took it to the studio, taped a brush to the end, put some acrylic paints and water container on the floor, and started to explore with the idea. I was impressed to see how hard it is to control the brush. And came to realize that this is about letting go, being loose and free. At the same time, I was social distancing from my paintings which came to be a hot topic during the Quarantine.
